These types of dental alginate impression materials have shorter working times (mixing times) and shorter setting times when compared with their normal counterparts. Alginates with fast setting (hardening time 1-2mins) make the process faster. Using dental alginate impression materials doesn’t require much technique but it involves several key steps for a successful impression:
Preparation: Start the procedure with the preparation of materials like a rubber bowl, spatula, and cup for water, alginate material should be in an airtight container and trays should be selected according to the patient's jaw size.
Mixing: A measured quantity of alginate powder and water should be mixed as per the guidelines set by the manufacturer to achieve smooth and uniform consistency.
Loading the tray: The loading of the tray is essential and it should be uniform to avoid any defects or bubbles, also not overload the tray to avoid gag reflex.
Taking the impression: proper placement of impression tray inside the patient’s mouth with proper techniques like insertion of tray with proper cheek retraction, and proper movements of tongue for accurate records.
Removing of impression: once the alginate is set it should be removed gently without harming the patient’s mouth and surrounding tissues and inspect the impression for accuracy, details and any blood clots or food particles.
Proper storage and cleaning of alginate dental impressions are necessary for accurate impression records.
Storage: once the impression material is removed from the patient’s mouth, it should be immediately poured with gypsum products to avoid any discrepancy. If immediate pouring is not possible, store in a humid environment under a damp cloth or cotton packs and place in sealed plastic pouches to prevent from drying.
Cleaning: Thoroughly cleaning of impression trays and instruments once the model or study cast is fabricated with running water or with mild detergents, later with disinfectants and sterilization, ensuring use for next use.
